Search for Earhart detailed at library program

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Seventy-five years ago this July, Amelia Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean as she was attempting to make an around-the-world flight.

Her disappearance has remained one of the great mysteries of the 20th century, but some archaeologists believe they have evidence to support their theory that Earhart’s airplane went down near Nikumaroro Island, sometimes called Gardner Island, about 2,500 miles southwest of Hawaii.

Archaeologist and historian Gary Quigg, of Crawfordsville, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Bartholomew County Public Library’s Red Room about the hypotheses and evidence collected by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery.
