NORTH VERNON — A Seymour man is being held in the Jennings County Jail after allegedly shooting and killing his ex-wife and shooting her daughter.
James "Darrell" Sowder, 62, 1380 Colonial Drive, is being held on murder and attempted murder charges, according to an Indiana State Police Report. More charges are anticipated when the investigation is completed, the police said.
Jennings County Sheriff's deputies responded to 1965 Chatsworth Lane in North Vernon on a 911 call for help at 8:52 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses told them that a man had shot two women in the head and that the suspect was still in the area, police said. Officers were talking with the witnesses when a vehicle turned onto the road they were sitting on and started driving toward their patrol cars in an attempt to leave the area.
Sgt. Jeff Jones and Deputy Alan Ritchie stopped the vehicle and its driver, Sowder. A handgun was located lying on the front passenger seat of the vehicle, according to the Indiana State Police release. Police took Souder into custody.
Deputies then responded to the victim's address and on arrival found Candice A. Sowder 64, lying on the front porch with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Officers entered the home and located the second victim, Regina D. Johnson 42, who had also been shot in the head. Johnson was taken by helicopter to an Indianapolis trauma center for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing.
