Reach Healthy Communities’ Tobacco Awareness Action Team will host Smoke Free Kids Day at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today. The team’s booth will be in front of the Family Arts Building.
Smoke Free Kids Day will include games such as beanbag hole and “Wheel of Misfortune,” which will teach about the dangers of tobacco use.
The team will be giving away free key chains, buttons, stickers and more. Members of the team also will hand out cessation information and information regarding Indiana’s Smoke Free Air Law.
To support the work of the Tobacco Awareness Action Team, T-shirts will be available for purchase.
This year’s fair takes on a different meaning for members of the group, because Indiana’s smoke-free air law, which prohibits smoking in public places and most places of employment, took effect July 1.
The Tobacco Awareness Action Team is using this milestone to educate fairgoers and to let the community know there is still work to do.
“Our goal is for our residents to have the opportunity to live healthy,” said Dana Stidham, Tobacco Awareness Action Team chairperson, in a news release. “Despite the challenges that came with passing our first ordinance in 2006, today most people expect a smoke-free environment. Now, I think our county residents will also benefit from healthier, smoke-free workplaces.”
