Solid waste management educators available to present programs

Before we can think about it, spring will be here. Springtime is education season for us at Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District.

We wanted to let you know the various educational opportunities for educators in the county as spring tends to book up quickly.

Solid Waste provides free programming, including tours and presentations to educators and community groups in Bartholomew County. Our programs are designed to be fun, hands-on and interactive education experiences. Transportation costs are covered for tours if you are using Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. or Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. busing.

In-classroom programs

In-classroom programs, brought to your location and available all year, include topics such as recycling, landfills, household hazardous waste, water pollution and more.

Landfill, wetlands tours

Tours of the Bartholomew County landfill are available for third-grade students and older. Tours are offered seasonally for the 2014

spring-fall season. We will start tours March 31, and they will continue through Oct. 3.

Tours include the landfill/wetlands, wetlands education program with kidscommons and SWMD educational programming, all with a maximum of

65 students per tour.

Recycling center tours

Tours of the Columbus/Bartholomew Recycling Center are available for prekindergarten to high school ages and offered all year, weather depending. Tours consist of a guided experience through the center, Bioswale, and educational programming with kidscommons. There is a maximum of 50 students per tour.

School house tours

Little Red School House

(Recycling Center) and Little Red School House Too (landfill) are open to all educators of Bartholomew County, including school teachers, scout leaders, after-school teachers and community group leaders. Our LRSH facilities have various materials such as craft/art supplies, classroom supplies and classroom furniture.

LRSH is open at the Recycling Center 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. LRSH Too is open

8 to 10 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month.
