EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

Rookie backup kicker Andrew Furney booted a 51-yard field goal with 1 minute, 8 seconds remaining to lift the New York Jets past the Indianapolis Colts 13-10 on Thursday night in the preseason-opener for both teams.

Colts starting quarterback Andrew Luck played just one series, completing 4 of 5 passes for 53 yards and leading the team to a field goal.

The Colts, who already have been hit hard by injuries, lost more players in Thursday’s game, including on the offensive line, an area the team hopes to improve this season.

On the opening drive, starting center Khaled Holmes departed after his left ankle was injured. Tackle Ulrick John later left the game with a right ankle injury.

Indianapolis’ first drive of the preseason resulted in a 39-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri.

The Jets answered with a 51-yard field goal by Nick Folk that hit the crossbar and went over.

The Colts scored the game’s first touchdown when backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and Boom Herron connected for a 12-yard touchdown with 13:17 left in the first half.

With reserve quarterback Michael Vick leading the way, New York answered with a 1-yard run by former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson.

Trent Richardson, who struggled after arriving in Indianapolis last season in a deal with the Cleveland Browns, carried the ball five times for 13 yards.

Jets starting quarterback Geno Smith completed 4 of 6 passes for 33 yards.

Hasslebeck completed 10 of 15 passes for 114 yards.
