As I read about the conflict between the council and the mayor around the demotion of Ben Wagner, I seem to be missing something. First off, I want to say I know Ben and have a high regard for him. I have not seen anything about the financial systems in place.

In all my experience, organizations have some financial checks and balances in place. It is usually run by a treasurer, controller or comptroller. It is their job to monitor the inflow and outflow of money on a regular basis. Where were they in all this? That was quite a bit of money not showing up every month.

And I cannot imagine that, even though the “rent collection” falls under the Parks and Recreation Department, that Wagner was expected to knock on the door of Snappy Pizza every month and ask for the rent check. Other rents were coming in and being processed by some kind of financial system.

Who oversees that on a daily basis? Surely not the director. My organizational consulting experience tells me that there is something else going on here. I have no data, just a curiosity.
