HOPE — Class A No. 10 Southwestern (Shelby) ran out to a 40-21 halftime lead Thursday night and held on to post a 75-63 Mid-Hoosier Conference girls basketball win at Hauser.
Leslie Sims and Ellie Trotter each scored 16 points to lead the Jets (6-13, 2-6), who were only 15 of 36 from the free-throw line.
“I was proud of the effort in the second half, but our free-throw shooting hurt us down the stretch against a solid, ranked team,” Hauser coach Scott Seiple said.
Owls play Stars tough
BEDFORD — Seymour played an even first half with undefeated Class 4A No. 2 Bedford North Lawrence before the Stars pulled away in the second half for a 58-41 Hoosier Hills Conference win.
Brianna Gillaspy and Sidney Carr each scored nine points to lead the Owls (9-12, 3-4). The game was tied at 22 at halftime.
Eagles fall to Braves
TRAFALGAR — Brown County was within 18-15 after one quarter, but Indian Creek pulled away for a 64-38 victory.
Whitney Williamson led the Eagles (10-9) with 20 points. Sasha Robinson added 12.
Bull Frogs qualify for finals
Columbus North girls swimmers qualified for Saturday’s North Sectional finals in every event at Thursday’s preliminaries.
Maddie Wyke had the fastest qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 24 seconds) and 100 butterfly (58.51), and Marah Bieger was fastest in the 200 indivdual medley (2:13.76) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.78).
Others earning top seeds are Rachael Sollman in the 100 freestyle (53.65) and Emma Wyke in the 100 backstroke (1:00.59).
The Bull Frogs earned the fastest qualifying times in the 200 medley (1:58.33), 200 freestyle (1:44.53) and 400 freestyle (3:51.34) relays.
Karen Wildemann qualified second in both the 50 freestyle (25.48) and 100 freestyle (55.83). Also qualifying second were Mackenzie Fry in the 200 freestyle (2:00.38), Emma Wyke in the 200 IM (2:18.84) and Kelcie Davie in the 500 freestyle (5:35.91).
Columbus East qualified for the finals with a sixth-best qualifying time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.59) and the seventh-fastest qualifying time in the 400 freestyle relay (4:11.78).
Diving preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Chick Newell Natatorium. Swimming finals will start at 1 p.m.
North will be looking to add to its state-leading 32 sectional championships. They’ve won 28 of the past 29 sectionals.
