KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Columbus native Tony Stewart will return to racing this weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Atlanta, Georgia, according to a statement posted late Thursday afternoon by his team, Stewart-Haas Racing.
Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race will be Stewart's first since his Aug. 3 start at Pocono (Pennsylvania) Raceway.
Stewart sat out the past three NASCAR Sprint Cup races following an Aug. 9 accident in which driver Kevin Ward Jr. was killed during a sprint car feature at the Canandaigua (New York) Motorsports Park. Ward was struck by a car Stewart was driving, and died afterward.
