COLUMBUS - Columbus’ Mark Stewart, leader of an Indianapolis community development agency in a tough, poverty-stricken, southeastside neighborhood, has been named the new president of United Way of Bartholomew County.
He will assume his post March 12, replacing Doug Otto, who has served as president for more than 16 years. He will be introduced to the community at the United Way annual meeting April 3.
“I have optimism, and can see hidden value,” Stewart said, speaking by phone from the Indianapolis office of Southeast Neighborhood Development, where he has served as president since 2005. “Some people look at a neighborhood and see one thing, but I always have been able to pick out assets and think, ‘Wow, this is a really great building.’”
