Menard Inc. plans to build a 10,000-square-foot strip mall on Columbus’ west side, on the vacant lot between Wendy’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.
The proposal filed with the city shows the building in the center of the lot, with a total of 117 parking spaces on all four sides, and store fronts facing Jonathan Moore Pike to the north. The plan shows four tenant spaces measuring between 1,200 and 4,750 square feet —
although as of yet, no tenants have been announced.
Jeff Abbott, spokesman for Eau Claire, Wis.-based Menard, said if things work out as planned, the company hopes to begin construction no later than spring of 2014.
The Menard proposal was approved by the Columbus Plan Commission.
The development site for the new strip mall measures just over 2 acres and is part of the Columbus Crossing site, which covers nearly 170 acres and includes much of the area south of Jonathan Moore Pike, and east of the interstate.
Many properties directly south of Jonathan Moore Pike had been developed for a long time, but Menard Inc. jump-started a new phase of development when it opened its store in 2004. Within two years, a Walmart and a Sam’s Club had been built on either side of the Menards Store. Smaller developments on that side of town soon followed.
Menard has sold some of the properties, including the Sam’s Club and Walmart sites, but retains ownership of several more parcels, including the site of the newly proposed strip mall and all of the parcels just north of Merchant Mile, the street that divides the big-box stores from the more entrenched developments immediately south of Jonathan Moore Pike.
