Student taken to Riley after Columbus accident

Follow The Republic:

A 15-year-old Columbus North student was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle shortly before noon Wednesday. He was taken to an Indianapolis hospital with head injuries.

Gabriel W. Halstead, 2648 Sycamore St., was first transported to Columbus Regional Hospital following the 11:49 a.m. accident at the intersection of Hawcreek Ave. and 25th Street before being transferred to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Methodist.

Witnesses at the scene told emergency responders that Halstead was attempting to catch up with a group of fellow students who were crossing at a marked crosswalk when the traffic light changed, according to investigators.
