The Hauser baseball team put on an offensive clinic Thursday, as it crushed Madison Shawe 17-1 in five innings in the Madison Shawe Sectional semifinals.
The Jets, 13-11, play for the sectional championship at 7 p.m. Monday against Jac-Cen-Del, which defeated South Decatur 10-0 in the earlier game in six innings. The Cougars finished their season 12-11.
Hauser and Jac-Cen-Del split their two regular-season meetings May 3 in a doubleheader.
“We have to come out and play like we normally do,” Hauser baseball coach Jerry Schoen said. “We won one and lost one against them earlier in the year. They have a really good pitcher, so we just have to come out focused and just do our thing.”
“Our preparation will be just like we prepare for every game,” said Hauser shortstop Brooks Bailey who had two triples, a double and drove in four runs in the win Thursday. “We just have to play like we always play and keep staying focused and getting the job done.”
As hot as the Jets’ offense was, starting pitcher Jared Schoen pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and striking out eight batters to earn the win.
“He started out a bit slow,” Jerry Schoen said. “He picked it up after the first couple innings. He found his spots and pitched well from there.”
“Our defense played well tonight,” Bailey said. “We established great communication tonight in the infield and in the outfield as well.”
The Jets picked up five runs in the first two innings but only registered a single hit due to three batters being hit, a couple of walks and three throwing errors by the Hilltoppers.
“We took advantage of the opportunities they allowed us to have early on,” Schoen said. “We started getting hits later on in the game with guys in scoring position and that helped us open up the game some.”
The Jets scored another three runs in the third inning, highlighted by Bailey’s two-run double. The bats came alive again in the fourth inning when Bailey knocked in another two runs off of a triple, Rory Thayer had an RBI single, Nathan Branum had an RBI single, and Jared had a two-run single to add another six runs in the inning.
