Isaac Walling, Columbus East senior swimmer

Walling won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke and swam on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams in a 120-60 win at Madison.

His performance last week:

“I didn’t swim any of my strong events, so to do 1:01 in the backstroke — it’s a little slower than last year — but for not swimming it all season, I think that’s pretty good.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I pretty much listen to my iPod to get pumped up a little bit and maybe sleep on the bus.”

Favorite drink:

“Powerade mixed with water”

Favorite food:

“Bacon”

Favorite music group:

“Maroon 5 or Lifehouse”

Favorite book:

“‘The Great Gatsby’ or ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy”

Favorite class:

“Photography and visual communications. I’ve always enjoyed working on digital art and stuff.”

Role model:

“Nelson Mandela”

Best advice:

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll be among the stars. Never give up. If you want something, put your mind to it and go after it. Don’t let anybody get in your way.”

Athletics goal:

“Break records here at East and possibly get to state this year.”

If you could travel anywhere:

“Probably a private island in the Caribbean”

Grace Haskett, Columbus North freshman swimmer

Haskett set a conference record in the 100 backstroke and as part of the 200 medley relay team and also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team and finished second in the 50 freestyle Saturday to help lead the Bull Dogs to the Conference Indiana title.

Her performance last week:

“I was surprised with that (backstroke) time. I had been going 58s and 59s all season, and to pull a (56.89) is impressive.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I like to listen to hip-hop to get me pumped for sprint races.”

Favorite drink:

“Pink lemonade”

Favorite food:

“Cheesy chicken lasagna”

Favorite music group:

“Rihanna”

Favorite book:

“‘Percy Jackson’ series”

Favorite class:

“I kind of like biology and science.”

Role model:

“My old coach (at Lawrence County Aquatics), Mark McKay”

Best advice:

“If you’re coming into high school, prepare for the best. Don’t prepare for the worst.”

Athletics goal:

“Make the Olympic team.”

If you could travel anywhere:

“Africa. I’d like to do a mission trip there sometime.”
