The Republic’s Athletes of the Week

Follow The Republic:

Male

Columbus East senior wrestler Kyle Stillinger

(Stillinger went 5-0 to win the 152-pound class at the Al Smith Invitational in Mishawaka on Friday and Saturday and become the first Columbus East wrestler to win a championship at the tournament)

His performance last week:

“Oh my gosh, it was awesome. It was tough head-to-head competition. I just had the right mindset on it. I went out and did my thing. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my coaches and teammates.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I listen to my music to get me pumped. I clear my head, and I focus on one thing.”

Favorite drink:

“Monster. Right before I wrestle.”

Favorite food:

“Chili. My mom (Cassie) makes the best chili in the world.”

Favorite music group:

Jason Aldean

Favorite book:

“The World at War”

Favorite class:

“History, by far. I’ve always been interested in presidents, how government works.”

Role model:

“(East assistant coach) Adam Zollman. He always gives me confidence. Every day he tells me that I need to work a little harder.”

Best advice:

“Never give up when times get tough. My mom tells me that all the time. She knows I get frustrated.”

Athletics goal:

“My main goal would be to go to state, do the best I can and represent East wrestling the best I can.”

If you could travel anywhere:

“Germany. There is so much history in Germany. It would be cool just to learn about it.”

Female

Columbus East senior gymnast Daran Brady

(Brady won every individual event in Columbus East’s victory against visiting Seymour on Friday. She scored 36.75 on the all-around to distance herself from all the other competitors)

Her performance last week:

“I was prepared, and I was satisfied with my performance. Of course, you always can improve. My goal is basically to raise my individual score.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“The night before a meet, I always eat spaghetti at my house. And I always have the same breakfast, peanut butter toast and chocolate milk.”

Favorite drink:

“Chocolate milk”

Favorite food:

“Spaghetti”

Favorite music group:

“Norah Jones. She is    soothing. It calms me down.”

Favorite book:

“Nineteen Minutes” by Jodi Picoult

Favorite class:

“Math, because there is not a lot of memorizing. You have to figure out the problems.”

Role model:

“My brother, Dustin. He is 25. He taught me how to chase my dreams.”

Best advice:

“Never give up.”

Athletics goal:

“I want to be on the wall (pictures of East state champions hang on the wall near where the gymnastics team works out). I want to be on the podium at state.”

If you could travel anywhere:

“Italy. It would be beautiful, and I love spaghetti.”
