The Republic’s athletes of the week

Follow The Republic:

Male

Columbus North junior swimmer Cody Taylor

Taylor won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke and swam on two winning relay teams Saturday to lead the Bull Frogs to a runner-up finish in their own sectional.

His performance last week:

“I definitely know I have a lot of room for improvement. I missed a majority of my turns. They were really bad, so I know I have time there I can drop. I was definitely happy with (the times) because they were both lifetime bests and both school records, but I know I’ll need to improve to win.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I just envision myself winning. This year, I’ve been thinking a lot about the relays, and I feel like it takes a lot of pressure off my individual events.”

Favorite drink:

“Water”

Favorite food:

“Steak”

Favorite music group:

“I’ve listened to a lot of Jay-Z lately and Frank Sinatra. I’m really all over the place in music.”

Favorite book:

“‘The Lost Symbol,’ by Dan Brown”

Favorite class:

“Accounting or AP U.S. History”

Role model:

“I look up to Ryan Lochte quite a bit because of how much training he does. He’s not the best, but he’s trained to where he’s become the best. With how he composes himself and how nice he is to his fans and all that,   I think he’s a good role model.”

Best advice:

“‘Don’t worry about what others are doing; worry about yourself,’ and ‘You bring others up to your level; you don’t let other people bring you down.’”

Athletics goal:

“I’d like to see my name up on the record board five times by the end of (this) week. I’d like to win every event this weekend. I’d like to see our relays shock some people because no one takes us seriously.”

If you could travel anywhere:

“Rome”

Female

Columbus North senior gymnast Danielle McDermott

McDermott won the all-around competition in last week’s dual-meet victory over Roncalli. She captured the vault, bars and beam and finished second in the all-around Saturday to help the Bull Dogs to the Conference Indiana team title.

Her performance last week:

“I feel like I could have done a little bit better on some of the events; but overall, I feel like I tried my best.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“I just listen to music and go over everything in my head with my routines.”

Favorite drink:

“Tomato juice”

Favorite food:

“Spaghetti”

Favorite music group:

“Mumford & Sons”

Favorite book:

“Anything by Sarah Dessen”

Favorite class:
