NORTH VERNON — It’s time for laughs at the Park Theater in downtown North Vernon this weekend when the Jennings County Players present “Playing Doctor” by William Van Zandt and Jane Milmore.
“This comedy is different because it’s fast moving and the laughs just don’t stop,” said director Mich Callahan. “Many comedies are slow moving because they have to set things up so the audience understands the jokes. This play opens with a joke, and the laughs just keep coming.”
The play is based on a web of deception when Rob’s parents come to visit their son, whom they believe they have supported all the way through Columbia’s University School of Medicine. The problem is Rob is not a doctor at all; but instead, an unemployed English major working on his first novel.
“Sometimes it seems live community theater is a dying art form. But here, the Jennings County Players are keeping things going; and this play makes it easy. It’s just fun,” Callahan said.
The Jennings County Players have been producing plays for the community for 40 years. The group is a nonprofit organization, and all their activities are done on a voluntary basis. Membership is open to all ages.
“You do not have to be a member of the Jennings County Players to be in a play,” theater board member Bill Reichenbach said. “Our auditions are open to the public. You don’t have to do anything as a member either. When we put on a play, we do have many members who pitch-in to do whatever is needed. That makes it fun. We have a good time.”
“I think one reason the Jennings County Players are still around is community support, that is so important,” Callahan said. “And I hope we have good community participation for this play. That is what makes it all worth while.”
