The race season, like the season for most sports, has continued to get longer.
The regular season for most area tracks ends in early to mid-September. However, promoters now tack additional races onto the end of their season. The additional races generally don’t figure into the track’s points races.
Troy “Sumo” Tabata, general manager of Twin Cities Raceway Park at Vernon, has announced an additional race for his track. Unlike his regular-season race programs, it will feature sprint cars.
Although Twin Cities is a great track for sprint-car racing, its fan base is made up primarily of stock car fans. Also, there are four tracks that normally host sprint-car races that will have ended their seasons. Consequently, there should be a lot of cars and fans available for Twin Cities’ Oct. 5 special program.
In addition to sprint cars, the Oct. 5 program will feature Indiana Late Model Series cars, pure stocks and hornets. It should make for an easy weekend for a couple of local sprint-car teams. Chase Stockton and Dakota Jackson, both of Elizabethtown, could almost drive their cars to the track.
Top POWRi competitors
Pete Willoughby and Keith Kunz spent Friday the 13th traveling to Illinois to compete in POWRi midget race. While POWRi fields are not nearly as deep as the ones that turn out for a USAC show, their feature isn’t exactly a “gimme” either. On the other hand, Kunz and Willougby, along with their drivers, don’t lose too many in USAC, either.
Rico Abreu drove the Keith Kunz Motorsports midget to a victory in the Herb Marlow Memorial POWRi midget feature. Another Kunz- Willoughby driver, Christopher Bell, was second, while Dave Darland was third.
In the POWRi 600 c.c. Outlaw Micro Series feature, Cale Thomas held off Nathan Benson for the win. In the Herb Barlow Memorial MOWA winged sprint-car feature, Bryan Clauson held off Bell for the win while Jerrod Hull was third.
