Natural gas provider Vectren Corp. is warning customers of a scam involving an alleged federal program to help them pay utility bills.
The scam artists claim that the federal government is providing help with utility bills. To qualify for help, customers must provide personal information, including credit card and bank routing numbers.
Vectren said in a news release that customers have been targeted in person, through social media, text messages, fliers and phone.
The company said that whenever customers are contacted by people claiming to represent Vectren, they should call the company’s customer service center for verification at 800-227-1376.
