Woman struck, killed crossing road

Follow The Republic:

NORTH VERNON — An elderly Jennings County woman was killed when she was struck by a vehicle Tuesday night while walking across a busy thoroughfare on the northeast side of North Vernon.

Rellie Fish, 82, of North Vernon was pronounced dead upon arrival at the St. Vincent Jennings Hospital emergency room.

The accident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on North State Street, near the Wendy’s restaurant.

Fish was attempting to walk across the five-lane highway when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by David Craft, 29, of Batesville, according to investigating Officer Scott Willis.

A North Vernon Police Department news release stated the caller who reported the accident told police Fish did not appear to be breathing immediately after she was hit by the 2003 Honda Pilot.

First-responders unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate the woman at the scene before she was taken by ambulance to the hospital, according to the release.

While the area north of FDR Drive was well lit by several businesses to the east, as well as a shopping center to the west, there are no crosswalks, stop signs or traffic signals where Fish was struck, according to police.

No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
