COLUMBUS— John Silnes strapped on his helmet and hopped on his bicycle the same way Luke Schneider did. They weaved around the Columbus BMX dirt track, rolled down hills and popped off peaks for air time.
Silnes, 68, believes he’s the second-oldest BMX rider in the country. Schneider is 6 years old.
“I’m ranked third in the nation,” Schneider said, without a pause for thought.
Riders of all ages and skill levels competed in the sixth and final event of the National Bicycle League’s 2010 Indiana State Championship BMX Racing Series Saturday in Columbus. Winning wasn’t everything for the 152 riders competing.
It was also about experiencing the thrill of the sport.
“It’s amazing,” said Frank Hoskins, a former pro BMX rider who raced in Saturday’s pro-am event. “It’s such an adrenaline rush.”
