A Hartsville hog farmer has approval to build a concentrated animal feeding operation housing 4,400 hogs on 378 acres in Clifty Township.
The Bartholomew County Board of Zoning Appeals approved William Gelfius’ proposal Monday night at a hearing at Columbus City Hall.
Gelfius has also received needed permits from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
The hogs will be housed in a building at 20565 East County Road 200N.
Members of the Anderson Falls CAFO Fighters had opposed the proposal, saying nearby neighbors don't want to deal with the smell, increased truck traffic, possible contamination of groundwater and possible harm to property values and the nearby Anderson Falls Nature Preserve.
