Ila Mae Brooks, 87, of East County Road 100S, died at 8:26 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Brooks was a homemaker and an active member of First Christian Church in Columbus. In her earlier years she enjoyed quilting. She was an avid IU basketball fan and NASCAR fan and loved spending time with her family and friends.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation and private inurnment are planned. Arrangements were entrusted to Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to donor’s choice of charities.

Born July 7, 1925, Ila Mae was the daughter of John L. and Sallie B. (Johnson) Akers. She married Robert E. Brooks on June 4, 1945, in Topeka, Kansas. They moved to Columbus, Indiana, about 1947.

Survivors include Robert, her husband of 67 years; daughters, Lynn Sites of Indianapolis and Christine (John) East of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Krista (Todd) Layfield of Indianapolis, Jon R. Chambers of Columbus and Joseph M. (Angie) Chambers of Hope; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Michael Layfield and Austin and Ashley Chambers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Norma Leibrock; and brothers, Charles and Jay Akers.
