Miss Katherine "Katie" McBurnett, 21, of Columbus, Indiana, formerly of Hanover, entered this life on September 10, 1991, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was the loving daughter of Michael Kent and Judy Faye Axley McBurnett.
"Kat," as she was affectionately named by her daddy, was raised in Hanover and attended the Southwestern school system, where she participated in the History Club. "Dee," as she was known by her friends, moved to Columbus when she was in the eighth grade and was a 2010 graduate of Columbus North High School. She attended Hanover Baptist Church and was baptized by Pastor J.D. Traylor.
Katie was an avid swimmer and enjoyed the H2O Swim Team in Madison. In 2007, she underwent a heart transplant due to a virus that had attacked her heart. After her transplant she was a competitive swimmer with the U.S. Transplant Games, where she won four gold medals, one silver and one bronze. During high school she enjoyed lifeguarding at Ceraland in Columbus. Dee was currently a sophomore at Hanover College and enjoyed her friends and college family.
"Sis," as she was called by her mom, enjoyed attending her mother's Beta Sigma Phi sorority and helping with the Madison Regatta Scholarship Pageant. "Katie Bug," as her brother, Chris, nicknamed her, loved arts and crafts, making macramé jewelry, jet skiing, music, boating and all animals. She enjoyed the love and affection of her American bulldog, Dante. Katie will be remembered for her devotion to family, her determined spirit and her zest for life.
Katie passed away suddenly from complications of her heart transplant surgery. She died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at her home in Columbus.
Katie will be missed by her heartbroken parents, Michael and Judy McBurnett of Columbus, Indiana; her loving brother, Christopher McBurnett, and his wife, Britney, of Bloomington; her grandpa, Robert Clifford "Mac" McBurnett and his wife, Marcia, of Aurora, Colorado; her uncles and aunts, Randy and Joanna McBurnett of California, Robert and Donna Thielen of Arkansas City, Kansas, and Gary and Shirley Brewer of Wellington, Kansas; her great-uncles and great-aunts, Sam McBurnett of Denison, Texas, Maxine Ryle of Esparto, California, Bob and Maxine Masquelier of King Fisher, Oklahoma, Zandren Cowles of Wichita, Kansas, and Nina and Pete Rininger of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; her cousins, Danny Squires, Bradley, Kristen and Heather; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Raymond and Laura Axley and Helen Katherine McBurnett Coppenbarger; her uncle, Ronald Axley; and her cousin, Pat Cowles.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 23, 2012, by the Rev. J.D. Traylor at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from noon until time of the service at the funeral home.
