Donald L. Bates, 78, of Greenwood, IN, passed from this life on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

Mr. Bates was born on July 25, 1934, in Martinsville, IN, to the late James and Helen (Norman) Bates. He spent his childhood in Martinsville and graduated high school there with the class of 1952. Following high school, he attended Indiana State University.

He was a first lieutenant in the Indiana National Guard and a member of the Elks Lodge, the National Rifle Association and ABBK Club for many years. Don was a marketing director for Rubbermaid for 25 years and retired in 1998. He had previously worked for Hamilton Cosco as a design engineer in Columbus. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf.

He leaves behind his loving family, including two sons, Greg Bates of McKinney, Texas, and David Bates (wife, Violet) of Hope, IN; five daughters; Sally Rohm of Columbus, IN, Jane Ann Kiehl of Seal Beach, CA, Irene Lutz (husband, Don) of Weaverville, CA, Miriam McMahan (husband, Michael) of El Segundo, CA, and Laura Bates of Anaheim, CA; one sister, Anita Owens of Indianapolis; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Bates.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, September 30, 2012, from noon to 2 p.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center in Martinsville. A celebration of life service, to be officiated by Rev. Stephen Johnson, will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
