Robert Craig Eves, 81, of Hope, passed away October 10, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor.
He was born August 15, 1931, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to the late Vernon and Georgia (Williams) Eves. His brothers, Richard and Gerald Noel Eves preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Ellen Smith and Helen Eves, both of Alpharetta, Georgia; and a brother, Paul Garland Eves of Winchester, Virginia. Robert is survived by special friends, Robert and Roberta Kroger of Westport and Mareta Hailsup of Columbus. He also loved and cherished his “special little buddies,” Thomas Schuler, Megan Schuler, Ava Kroger and Carmen Kroger.
Robert retired from Rhoades Aviation, where he was a pilot and master mechanic for many years. He began his flying career at Bowman Field in Louisville, Kentucky at a very early age after classes in grammar school. He flew dignitaries to Lexington, Kentucky for Kentucky Colonel celebrations and was a Kentucky Colonel himself. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and was assigned to an Army officer in Austria as his personal pilot. He toured Europe with the officer’s son and went to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. He learned photography at the Leica Camera Company. His pictures of ballet dancers on the battlements of a castle were published. Royal Dutch Air Lines offered him a pilot’s job, but he returned to the states with his unit. Following his return, he served in the Air National Guard and learned to fly jet airplanes. He was an avid student of the universe and particularly of black holes. He was a figure skater and avid parachutist.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday October 17, 2012 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Father Clem Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 9 until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends are invited to light a virtual candle and send a message to the family via the internet.
