Geraldine Mae Graham, 96, a resident of the Protestant Home in Evansville since 2010, died at 5:45 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
She lived in Bartholomew County from 1965 to 2010, and was the widow of the Reverend Connelly L. Graham. Geraldine was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Born in Red Cloud, Nebraska on December 26, 1915 to Reverend Archie and Lena Harris, Geraldine graduated in 1937 from Bethany Methodist Hospital, in Kansas City, Kan. Licensed and certified as a registered nurse in Kansas, Ohio, California and Indiana, she worked at Concordia Hospital in Concordia, Kansas; General Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio; Methodist and General Hospitals in Los Angeles, California. On August 24, 1940, Geraldine married Connelly L. Graham in Las Vegas, Nevada. From 1946 to 1956, she assisted him in managing their citrus ranch in Southern California and was the manager of their tropical bird aviary, which shipped more than 3000 rare, tropical birds a year to pet stores across the United States.
Geraldine was not only a devoted wife, homemaker, quilter, and avid gardener, but served others throughout her life. She was a camp nurse for Girl Scout summer camps, a troop leader, and a member and officer of Eastern Star’s La Palomar Chapter #202 in Covina, California. While living in Colorado, she was a member and president of the Alpine Toastmistress Club; and as a Red Cross Instructor for Arapahoe County, she taught mother and baby classes in Englewood. In Indiana, she was Supervisor of Nursing at Ken Joy Convalescent Home in Hope from 1965 to 1976; a member of Columbus’ First Christian Church and Martha’s Circle-Women’s Council; and for 11 years she was a nurse’s aid instructor. Geraldine also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was a member of numerous garden and homemaker clubs in California, Colorado and Indiana. She spoke to many church and school groups in foreign countries. For over 21 years, until she was almost 90, Geraldine prepared and served a “day before” Thanksgiving dinner in her home for widows in the Hartsville area.
