Shirley Howard David, 90, passed away November 18, 2012. He was a resident of Greenwood.
Born October 2, 1922, in Helmsburg, Indiana, Shirley was the son of the late Shirley and Mary David, Sr. He married Rosemary Tinkle on May 1, 1942, and she preceded him in death on January 19, 2008.
Shirley is survived by his children, Jeannie (Reinold) Von Fange, Kathy (Tom) Leslie, Patty (Warren) Craft, Steve David and Mike (Elizabeth) David; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Ford, Marjory Linehan and Beulah McCracken.
Shirley graduated from Center Grove High School in 1940 before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He was a 22-year veteran of the Air Force, serving during World War II as a B-24 pilot on 22 combat missions over Germany, Austria and Northern Italy. He spent the last few years of his military service stationed at the Pentagon as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
He later retired from the United States Postal Service after 20 years of service, having served as Postmaster in both Crothersville, Indiana, and Edinburgh, Indiana.
He had a passion for his family and sports, especially golf, having played his last round at The Legends Golf Club in October.
His family will host an informal open house from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Indiana Golf Office, 2625 Hurricane Road, Franklin, IN 46131.
