J. William Brooks, 75, of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Brooks was born on December 25, 1936, in North Vernon, Indiana, the son of Gilbert and Flora Wildey Brooks.

He was a machine operator for Golden Foundry in Columbus, Indiana, where he had worked for 30 years before retiring in 1984. He was a 30-year Golden Eagle of the Eagles Lodge in Columbus, Indiana, and a 30-year member of both the Moose Lodge and Am Vets, both in North Vernon, Indiana. He was former chairman of the American Red Cross in North Vernon and served on the North Vernon Civil Defense. He also served nine years in the National Guard.

Mr. Brooks enjoyed spending time at the Daily Double Horse Farm and spending time with his family.

He is survived by one son, Jay (Kim) Brooks of Columbus, Indiana; two daughters, Lezlie (Mark) Corya and Mari Ball, both of North Vernon, Indiana; a stepdaughter, Lori Crouch of North Vernon, Indiana; one sister, Rose Bush of North Vernon, Indiana; 11 grandchildren, Jacob Brooks, Nakia Ramirez and Josh Darnell, all of Columbus, Indiana, Sarah Brooks, Kyle Ball, Dalton Ball, Mason Ball, Bryan Meek and Aaron Meek, all of North Vernon, Indiana, and Joe Darnell and Sarah Darnell, both of Commiskey, Indiana; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an aunt, Hellen Ochs.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon, Indiana, with the Rev. Glenn Poynter officiating. Friends may call at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, from 4 until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will be at  Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, Indiana.
