Betty Jean (Foxworthy) Burney, 91, of Hope, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Miller's Merry Manor in Hope.
Mrs. Burney graduated from Westport High School in 1939. She graduated from Indiana University in 1943 with a BS degree in Home Economics and started teaching in 1943 at Tangier in Parke County. She then taught at Clifford High School from 1955 to 1957.
Mrs. Burney also taught Home Economics and Health at Hauser High School from 1957 until 1979 and was the sponsor for Future Homemakers of America. She was a member of IRTA and BARTA retired teachers associations and an officer of Westport High School Alumni Association. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hope and loved sewing, reading and cooking.
The funeral will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Calling hours will be Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or Hauser Dollars for Scholars.
Born in Johnson County Feb 25, 1921, Mrs. Burney was the daughter of Arlie W. and Sarah "Gertrude" Graham Foxworthy. She married Robert M. Burney Dec. 26, 1943, and he survives.
Other survivors include children, Dianne Flack of Hope, Joe (wife Cindy) Burney of Gessie and John Kevin Burney of Hope; grandchildren, Michael (Alanie) Flack of Hope, Tony Flack of Indianapolis, Clint Burney and Zach Burney, both of Gessie; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Aidan and Jakob Flack of Hope.
Mrs. Burney was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Graham Foxworthy.
