Ollie Hazelwood Jr., 88, of Vernon, Indiana, passed away at 2:47 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Aspen Place Health Campus in Greensburg, Indiana.
He was born March 10, 1924, in Danville, Kentucky, the son of Ollie Hazelwood Sr. and Mary Lillard Stringer. He married Mildred Irene Atwell June 28, 1943, in Lexington, Kentucky. She preceded him in death March 13, 2003.
Ollie retired January 1, 1982, after 16 years at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, where he was a parts line steward, and had worked for Soil & Water (ASCS) in Jennings County. He also was former mayor of Vernon.
He was a member of Vernon Baptist Church and the National Rifle Association. He served in the U.S. Army from July 23, 1943, until March 28, 1946. He was a 1942 graduate of Danville High School in Danville, Kentucky. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family, watching baseball and watching the Indianapolis Colts and the Cincinnati Reds.
He is survived by his four daughters, Marilee Barber and Frances Elaine (Robert) Woodard, both of North Vernon, Indiana, Patricia Ann (Karol) Ritz and Linda (Dan) Wright, both of Vernon, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Rob (Nicole) Barber and Brooke Woodard, both of Indianapolis, Indiana, April (Lex) Helm of Nashville, Tennessee, Karen (Virgil) Meeker of Vernon, Indiana, Kevin (Britta) Ritz of Rochester, Minnesota, Ollie Bryan (Susan) Woodard of Hayden, Indiana, Brett (Tammy) Woodard of North Vernon, Indiana, Jarrod Wright of Tacoma, Washington, and Geoffrey Wright of Chicago, Illinois; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2013, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon, Indiana, with the Rev. Don Morris officiating. Friends may call at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Sunday, January 13, 2013, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Monday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery with members of Matt Hester VFW Post No. 2021 providing military graveside rites.
