David Lawrence Johnston, 76, of Westport, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Morning Breeze Nursing Home. Born January 23, 1937, in Dearborn County, he was the son of Robert P. and Lillian M. (Ormes) Johnston.

He moved to Decatur County in 1951 and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1955. He worked as a carpenter with Hargitt Construction until 1972 when he started farming in Jackson Township. He attended Waynesburg Christian Church and was a member of  Sandusky United Methodist Church, Westport Masonic Lodge No. 52 F. & A.M. and served on the Board of Directors for the Westport Area Community Building for many years.He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with family and neighbors.

Dave was very involved in the rebuilding of Waynesburg Christian Church after the fire. He was a friend and helper to his family and neighbors.

He married Janice Kay Brewsaugh in Sandusky on July 20, 1958, and she survives along with his daughters, Nancy K. Oleksy of Westport and Sandra E. (Gary) Profitt of Greensburg; his son, Allen D. (Laura) Johnston of Hope; his five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Leonard Johnston.

The funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with the Rev. David Burnett officiating. Burial will follow at Union Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends and family may call Sunday, January 27, 2013, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Waynesburg Christian Church, Sandusky United Methodist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
