Dean Perry, 76, of 600 W, died at 12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

He was born in Columbus, March 16, 1936, the son of the late Merritt A. and Blanche Thomas Perry. He married Patricia Spanik on December 7, 1962, and she survives.

He previously was a school teacher at Booth-Setser Elementary School, was the Reading Specialist for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, and was concurrently the principal at Jefferson and Garfield Elementary Schools, McDowell Elementary, and Mt. Healthy Elementary, retiring in 1991 from Fodrea Elementary after 34 years of service. He also owned and operated DP Excavation for 40 years, and an antique business named "The Salvage Shop" in Edinburgh from 1984 to 1995. He enjoyed going to auctions, and loved the kids he served in the education field.

In addition to his wife, Dean is survived by sons, Shawn Michael (Trudy) Perry of Copperas Cove, Texas, Jay (Nina Curry) Perry of Columbus, and Tad Perry of Columbus; a daughter, Shannon (Jeff Gabbard) Spears of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Michelle, Joshua, Austin, Natalie, Shelby, Joey, and Matthew Perry, Emelia Spears, and Josh and Brittany Gabbard; and two great-grandchildren, Nick and Zach Perry.

Dean was preceded in death by his father in 1991, his mother in 2004; a grandson, Steven Arthur Perry on Feb. 16, 2012; and a brother, Wayne Perry on Sept. 11, 2011.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis officiating. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 9 until 9:45 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
