Charles Forest “Charlie” Hartwell, 99, of North Vernon, passed away at 2:40 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2013, at Jennings Healthcare Center in North Vernon.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Vernon Presbyterian Church, with calling from 9 a.m. until service time. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.
Born November 18, 1913, in Vernon, Charlie was the son of the late Alfred and Maggie Hartwell. He attended Vernon Presbyterian Church wherethe Rev. June Rogers had been his longtime friend and pastor.
At 16 years old, Charlie became Vernon Town Marshal, ordering a gun and badge from the Sears & Roebuck Catalog. He later worked for the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department. Also, as a young man, he worked for the Old Tunnel Mill and the railroad. In his later years, he worked for Arthur Sears Swing Factory and for Dale Bentz. He enjoyed watching sports, especially Cincinnati Reds baseball. He was a very devout Democrat.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents.
