Betty I. Newman, 74, of Taylorsville, died at 2:58 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2013, at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus.

Betty retired from Target, where she had worked for 15 years as a cashier, and was an Avon sales representative for 16 years. She was a member of Flat Rock Christian Church, loved her God and family.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

Born in Hope, Indiana, on April 21, 1938, Mrs. Newman was the daughter of Herod H. and Agnes L. Hartwell Black.

She married Edward Lee Newman on May 14, 1954. He preceded her in death on January 5, 2001.

Survivors include her children, James (Wanita) Newman of Columbus, Sylvia (Dale) Sexton of Taylorsville, Mark (Angela) Newman of Hartsville, Vickie Newman of Columbus and Rhonda (Brian) Myers of Taylorsville; brothers, Joseph (Sherri) Black of Morgantown and Billy (Rheatha) Black of Texas; sisters, Pauline Smith of Seymour and Deloris Collier of Taylorsville; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Wills Black, Willard Black, Ulysses S. Grant Black and Jumbo Black; a sister, Alice Clemens; a daughter, Charlotte Newman; and grandchildren, Travis Wayne McDonley and Joseph Neal Myers.
