Elsie Mae Smith, 88, of Greenwood, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013.
She was born Dec. 24, 1924, to the late Lela and Nat Branstetter in Horse Cave, Ky. She married the love of her life, William A. Smith, in 1943. They were devoted to each other and committed to their wedding vows with Bill taking care of her during her lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s. They were married 69 years.
Elsie worked for 20 years at J.C. Penney, first at Southern Plaza and then at Greenwood Park Mall. She loved being a homemaker and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her family fondly remembers her delicious homemade meals. She was also a talented seamstress.
She is survived by her husband; four children, Ken (Lorraine) Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., Tom (Marsha) Smith of Richmond, Va., Jim Smith of Indianapolis and Mary Lou (Marv) Habicht of Greenwood; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in passing by six brothers and sisters, including her twin sister, Essie; and two grandsons, Todd Smith in 1987 and Nicolas Habicht in 2004.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135. Friends and family may call from 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home. Elsie will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
The family wishes to thank Earlene Spears and the entire staff at Americare Hospice for their dedicated care of Elsie over the years.
