Virginia C. Shrader, 89, of New Castle, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home in Rushville, Indiana.
She was born August 21, 1923, in Kentucky, the daughter of the late John and Clara (Douglas) Burkhead.
Mrs. Shrader retired from the U.S. Shoe Factory in Osgood, Indiana, in 1988, and was also employed with the Foster Grandparent program for the last 10 years. She loved quilting and embroidering and doing word-search puzzles. She cherished spending time with the children at Cradles and spending time with her family. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Bobbie (wife Cindy) Shrader of Greensburg and Ray (wife Stephanie) of Columbus, Indiana; one daughter, Fay Fairchild of New Castle; seven grandchildren, Robert (wife Andrea) Shrader, Mike (wife Katie) Shrader, Greg (wife Kris) Bonfer, Charlene (husband James) Hurley, Travis (wife Allison) Shrader, Tyler (wife Lacey) Shrader, and Catie (husband Shane) Campbell; five great-grandchildren, Dani McDonald, Nicholas Shrader, Abby Shrader, Leana Shrader, Madison Shrader, Gavin Shrader, and soon to be born, Wyatt Shrader; one great-great-grandson, Gabriel Castletine; two sisters, Lillian Cruser of Shelbyville, Indiana, and Gerry Fancher of Louisville, Kentucky. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Burkhead, Raymond Burkhead, and Robert Burkhead; one sister, Nancy Burkhead; one daughter, Wilma (Sissy) Bonfer; and two sons-in-law, Herman Bonfer and Jim Fairchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2013, at the Hawcreek Baptist Church, 14541 N. County Road 900E, Hope, Indiana, with Pastor Bobby Slagle officiating. Burial will follow at Hawcreek Cemetery adjacent to the church. Friends and family may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Main & Davis Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, in New Castle and two hours prior to the service on Thursday at the Church.
