James I. Melton, 84, of Westport, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility at Columbus. He was born on March 11, 1929, in Burkesville, Kentucky, the son of James Robert and Anna Pearl (Anderson) Melton.

He was raised in Westport and lived there the majority of his life. He graduated from Vernon High School and retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of Minerva Masonic Lodge No. 98 F&AM at Miamisburg, Ohio, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, restoring cars, watching his grandkids play sports and Grandparents Day at school.

He married M. June Henry April 5, 1952, in Dayton, Ohio. She preceded him in death January 8, 2003.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Melton of Greensburg; his sons, Mark Melton of Westport and Michael (Jenny) Melton of Hamilton, Ohio; his sisters, Robbie Cox of Indianapolis, Betty Cole of Hudson, Florida, Sue Stout of Birdsboro, Pennsylvania, Anna Smith of Columbus, and Patricia Larson of Galesburg, Illinois; his eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, James I. Melton Jr.; and sisters, Blanche Dunham and Dorothy Johnson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with the Rev. Steve Pumphrey officiating. Burial will follow at Westport Cemetery. A time of visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
