Robert J. Irwin, 85, of Hartsville, passed away at 7:48 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at his residence.
He was born February 25, 1928, in Scipio, the son of Ray B. and Vera (Tooley) Irwin. He was raised in the Scipio Community and lived at his current residence in Bartholomew County since 1958. He graduated from Scipio High School in 1946 and retired in December 1984 as a supervisor with Hamilton–Cosco after 32 years of service. He married Norma Lou Adam October 6, 1957, at Bear Creek Baptist Church. She survives.
Mr. Irwin was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, the American Baptist Sandcreek Association, and Jefferson Proving Ground/Heritage Partnership and was a 50-year member of Alert Masonic Lodge No. 395. He also served as a trustee for Bear Creek Baptist Church and Cemetery. He served with of the U.S. Army 45th Division in Korea. He enjoyed his dog “Sugar,” watching and feeding the squirrels and birds in his back yard and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Mr. Irwin is survived by family and people who loved him including, Mary June Hern of Ocala, Florida, and Wanda Lee (Bob) Greathouse of Franklin; Max L. (Pam) Irwin of Tempe, Arizona, Sandra Bower of Sarasota, Florida, John (Betty) Irwin of Scipio, Mike (Jane) Irwin of Scipio, Keith Irwin of Columbus, Peggy (Dave) Peratt of West Chester, Ohio, Dick (Carolyn) O’Neal of Columbus, Dennis O’Neal of Columbus, Jane (John) Naf of Ocala, Florida, Deborah (David) Sharp of Columbus, Rhonda (John) Martin of Greenwood and Lee (Aurie) White of Rockton, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Max T. Irwin; and a sister, Betty J. O’Neal.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at Bear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Marvin Wright and Rev. David Burnett officiating. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, Jefferson Proving Ground/Heritage Partnership, Bartholomew County Humane Society or to the donor’s choice of charities.
