Michael Timothy Challies Sr., 49, of Elizabethtown, Indiana, was welcomed in the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, the result of a car accident in Seymour, Indiana.
Michael was born September 10, 1963, the son of Gordon “Cliff” and Judy (Sears) Challies Jr., and was raised in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a 13th generation Mayflower descendent.
He attended Cape Cod Regional Technical High School where he was very active in sports, lettering in soccer, hockey and baseball. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Cape Cod, of which he was a plank owner. He moved to Columbus, Indiana, in 1989 and earned his plumbing license. He was a self-employed plumber for 30 years and had formerly worked for Stearns Plumbing in North Vernon, Indiana, for 4 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Columbus, Indiana.
Michael loved people and was an avid outdoorsman. He always referred to the woods as “God’s Country.” He loved to hunt and fish and was famous for his fried fish with a secret batter. He continued to be a sports fan and loved the Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox. For a number of years he played softball in North Vernon.
Michael had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved his family and spent much time in prayer and Bible reading.
He is survived by his parents, Cliff and Judy Challies of North Vernon, Indiana; his two children, Michael Challies Jr. and Haley Challies, both of Columbus, Indiana; three brothers, Gordon Challies III and Greg Challies, both of North Vernon, Indiana, and Jon (Michelle) Challies of Seymour, Indiana; his companion, Gwen Collins of Elizabethtown, Indiana; six aunts and one uncle in Massachusetts and New Hampshire; four nephews, three nieces; and many cousins.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana, with the Rev. Don Galloway officiating. Burial and military graveside honors will follow the service. Friends may call at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013.
