Dr. Robert Farber, age 99, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.Born January 12, 1914, in Geneseo, Illinois, he was the son of Charles William and Hulda (Ogden) Farber.
Dr. Farber was Vice President and Academic Dean Emeritus at DePauw University. He was a Rector Scholar and a 1935 graduate with distinction from DePauw University, University of Chicago, MA 1940, and Indiana University, D.Ed 1950.
He served at DePauw University from 1935 to 1979 with the exception of 1941 to 1946 during World War II, for which he received the Bronze Star Medal for service in the European Theater.
At Depauw, he was Vice President and Academic Dean for 26 years and Acting President in 1976-1977. He was the recipient of Old Gold Goblet, Honorary Degree of Humane Letters, Leather Medal, Rector Scholar Achievement Award, President, North Central Association of Academic Deans, and "Who’s Who in America."
He was an honorary 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, AARP; past president of the local chapter, past State Legislative Chairman, Assistant State Director, Local Coordinator of Housing Program, Past president, Putnam County Foundation: Past President and over 50-year member of the Greencastle Kiwanis, Past President Health Careers Committee, Member of the Putnam County Council on Aging, Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, American Heart Association, Putnam County Mental Health Association, V.F.W. and other organizations.
He was preceded in death by wives, Vera (Kierstead) Farber and Edna E. (Klutts) Farber; his parents; and brothers, Herbert, Richard, and William Farber.
He is survived by his two children, Charlie Farber and wife, Jayne, of Columbus, and Jean Farber Braun and husband, Ronald, of Winston Salem, N.C.; and grandchildren, Ann and Rob.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013, at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until time of service. Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home in Greencastle has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Farber Education Fund, DePauw University, c/o the Putnam County Foundation, 2 N. Jackson St.; or Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, 307 Simpson St., Greencastle, IN 46135.
