Joann Sebastian Daily, 77, of North Riverside Drive died at 2:39 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving and devoted husband, children and grandchildren.
Joann was a Registered Nurse and spent her career at Columbus Regional Hospital. During her tenure, she worked in the Surgery and Recovery Room, Educational Services and finished her career as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse. After retirement, Joann taught as an Adjunct Instructor of Nursing at Ivy Tech Columbus Campus and at Hospice as an RN Educator. She completed many special projects including training and orientation.
Born September 1, 1935 in Columbus, Indiana, she was the daughter of Master Sergeant William Athrell Sebastian and Josephine Anna Fox Sebastian. As a young child, she lived in many states before settling back in Columbus during her elementary school years.
She graduated Columbus High School as Salutatorian. After high school, she attended Indianapolis General Hospital School of Nursing but left before graduating to marry her “sweetie”, Joseph Hager Daily on March 27, 1955. She returned to school in the early 1970’s and with the unwavering support of her husband, earned her Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree of Nursing at Indiana University, even completing a third of her Master’s program. She graduated with High Distinction and was selected as a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a nursing honorary association and was named in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Always a student and a leader in the community, Joann was a graduate of Leadership Bartholomew County.
She was honored as Medical Professional of the Year by the American Heart Association, Senior Citizen of the Year and served in executive membership roles with the Indiana State Nurses Association, District 13. Personally, Joann was a long time member of First Christian Church where she served in many ministry teams and attended numerous Bible studies.
Joann was a dedicated nurse and friend who maintained a strong faith in God. She was a woman with many interests and activities but her primary hobby was caring for others above herself. She was blessed to have a strong and close-knit family along with many life long friends.
Ever a caregiver, she touched many lives and always made time for others no matter the distance, weather or fatigue. She will be greatly missed by her husband Joe and children, Steven Joseph (Jeaney) Daily of Columbus, Karen Daily Kenny of Bloomington, and Laura Daily-Richardson of Columbus; grandchildren, Sarah Beth Kenny, Kyle Hager (Courtney) Daily, Amie Catherine Kenny and Kate Ashton Richardson; and a sister, Carolyn (Richard) Tempest of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Edna Catherine Sebastian, and a brother, William A. Sebastian.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday.
Inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association Team Walk to Remember - Columbus Walk September 2013, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or First Christian Church Building Fund.
