John C. "Jack" Schafer, 77, of Columbus, died at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
He was a 1953 graduate of Columbus High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University. Mr. Schafer was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict era and was honorably discharged March 9, 1956.
He was an industrial engineer at Cummins Engine Company, retiring after many years of service. After retirement, Mr. Schafer was a consultant for Cummins. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis officiating. Family and friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Inurnment will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the donor's choice of charities.

Born in Indianapolis August 24, 1935, Mr. Schafer was the son of William J. and Helen Roth Schafer. He married Connie H. Pruitt January 26, 1957, in Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years; children, Chuck Schafer of Cincinnati, Tom (Sandy) Schafer of North Kingstown, RI, Dan Schafer of Savannah, GA, and Nancy Moore of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Terry) Klinger of Fort Wayne; brothers, Bill (Ruth) Schafer of St. Louis, MO, and Larry (Ellen) Schafer of Carmel; a sister-in-law, Judy Schafer of Clearwater, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Schafer was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Schafer.
Arrangements were made by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
