Fred E. Barkes, 67, of Columbus, died at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Fred retired in 2003 as a lead programmer analyst at Cummins Engine Company where he had worked for 30 years. He also retired from the military, serving 10 years in the Air Force Reserves and 17 years in the Army Reserves. He was Columbus Township Trustee from 2003 to 2013.
A member of Community Church of Columbus, Columbus Township Fire Department, Indiana Township Association, ICAR and the American Legion, Fred was also a former baseball coach, past president of Bartholomew County Little League, former board member of the American Red Cross and a former Boy Scout leader.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Chuck Coleman officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon to time of service Saturday. Members of Columbus Township Fire Department will stand Honor Guard. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Born in Columbus, August 20, 1945, Fred was the son of Ira and Mary Polen Barkes. He married Sandy J. Baxter October 13, 1968.
Survivors include his wife; children, Jason (Summer) Barkes and David Barkes, both of Columbus; sisters, Nancy (Ed) Wilson of Freemont and Helen (Bill) Cutshaw of Franklin; and grandchildren, Wyatt, Lilly, Wesley, Jaylen, Maddie, Eli, Devin, Owen, Grace and Aiden Barkes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Barkes; a sister, Donna Barkes; and a son, Jeffery Barkes.
