Higinio M. "Gene" Castaneda, 63, of Columbus, passed from this life at 8:20 a.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 at his home.
Gene was a U.S Air Force veteran during the Vietnam War era and later served with the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
He was an electrician by trade and was a member of the Columbus American Legion Post 24.
He adored his granddaughter whom he loved to play games with and read to.
In keeping with Gene's wishes, cremation is planned.
Family celebrations of life will be held at later dates.

Born in San Antonio, Texas September 2, 1949, Gene was the son of Alfonso and Carolina Perez Castaneda Sr. Gene married Judy A. Hammond September 26, 1989.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of Texas; a daughter, Gwen (Steve) Swartzentruber of Columbus; his adoring granddaughter, Madison Swartzentruber of Columbus; brothers, Alfonso Jr., Jose, Hector, and Anthony Castaneda, all of Texas; and a sister, Mary Benbow of Texas.
Gene was preceded in death by his father.
