John R. Skobel Jr., 66, of Columbus, Indiana, died at 8:37 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Columbus, July 25, 1947, the son of Norma and John R. Skobel Sr. He married Sheila White January 3, 1968.
John served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and retired from the Columbus Police Department after serving our community for 20 years. He owned and operated Skobel Fencing for the past 20 years.
A a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1987 in Columbus, he also was a member of Columbus Elks Club and the F.O.P. He enjoyed camping, riding his Harley and spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years; his mother, Norma Skobel of Winter Haven, FL; his sister, Martha (Steve) Franklin of Winter Haven, FL; his brother, Jacob (Anita) Skobel of Leadville, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father, John R. Skobel Sr. February 3, 1984, and a son, John R. Skobel III, who died August 5, 1988.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Columbus Police Department Chaplain Al White officiating. Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh. Full military rites will be presented by the U.S. Marine Corps Ceremonial Unit and Columbus Police Department.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation, 341 W. 38th St., Suite 501, New York, NY 10018.
