Phyllis A. Smith Porter, 78, of Deefield Beach, Fla., passed away Aug. 27, 2013, at Boca Raton Hospital in Boca Raton, Fla. She was born May 27, 1935, in Brown County, Ind., to Emmett Smith Sr. and Hattie Mae (Gates) Smith. Phyllis graduated from Nashville High School, Nashville, Ind., and worked for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Ind., for several years.
She married Raymond Wade Porter in 1961 while he was a pilot for Cummins Engine Company. His employment later took them to Sewickley, Penn., Sparta, N.J., and then to Deerfield Beach, Fla., where they have made their home many years. Phyllis was an active and supporting member of GFWC Women's Club in Deerfield Beach and volunteered many hours in their library.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Wade; their three children, Robert Porter of Sparta, N.J., Lisa Shepherd (Robert) of New Bethel N.Y., and Nancy Porter of Ocala, Fla.; and grandchildren, Jessica, Jonathon, Gregory, Geoffrey, Victoria, Timothy and Shelley. She is also survived by two sisters, Hazel Gorby (Arliss) of Wooster, Ohio, and Bettie Johnston (Phillip) of Martinsville, Ind.; three brothers, Emmett Smith (Karen) of Brown County, Ind., Gary Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Terry Smith (Jane) of Brown County, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Martha Alice Johnson and Mary Ellen Smith; and one brother, John Smith.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Henderson Cemetery at Gnawbone.
