Crystal Freese Roscoe, 83, of Columbus, died at 6:08 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Roscoe was a graduate of Van Buren High School in Brown County and Indiana Business College where she majored in bookkeeping, secretarial courses and business administration. She also received a Rural Electric Management Degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and attended a U.S.D.A. accounting course.
She was employed at Bartholomew County R.E.M.C from 1953 to 1989, as an office worker, assistant bookkeeper, assistant office manager, and office manager. In November of 1982, she was appointed general manager, a position she held until August of 1989. She was the first woman general manager of an electric cooperative in the state of Indiana and at the time only the seventh in the United States. She also was the first woman to serve on the board of directors of Hoosier Energy, the energy supplier for 18 REMCs in Indiana.
She was a member of Ogilville Christian Church and served 17 years as church treasurer, from 1993 to 2010. A volunteer with Agency on Aging, she took people to their doctor's appointments, on shopping trips and trips to the beauty shop, did grocery shopping for individuals, and for approximately 13 years volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels.
She loved going to the family home place on State Road 135 near Story, which her dad and mom purchased in 1941, and whenever possible attended activities at Mount Nebo Methodist Church and Christiansburg Methodist Church in Brown County.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Martin E. Wright officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday. Burial will be at Christiansburg Cemetery in Brown County.

Crystal was born in Brown County February 27, 1930, the daughter of Ray and Vira Greathouse Freese. She married Russell J. Baughman in 1950. He preceded her in death in 1963. She married Glenn W. Roscoe in 1966. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Judy Roscoe of Brown County; stepgranddaughters, Kristin Klinger of Chicago and Jennifer Roby of Denver; nieces, Kathleen Freese Alexander of Virginia and Paula Freese Denbo of Bloomington; nephews, Oddis Lee Freese of Brownstown, Kevin Ray Freese of Brownstown and Michael Lee Freese of Brown County; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; grandparents, Jacob and Emily Ayers Greathouse and John Calvin and Nancy Kirts Freese; brothers, Paul, Glen, Neal and Howard Freese; and sisters, Pearl Thompson, Pauline Smith and Geneva Hobson.
