Earl L. Johnson, 81, of Westport, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient facility. He was born August 24, 1932, in Shoals, Indiana, the son of Ellsworth and Elsie (Short) Johnson.

He was raised in Dupont, graduated from Vernon High School in 1950 and retired from Cummins Engine Company after 29 years of service. He was a member of Westport Baptist Church where he also was custodian for 37 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Johnson was a big IU fan, loved all sports and enjoyed helping his son Ralph mow.

He married Lacondia Adalene Weekly August 5, 1956, at Vernon Baptist  Church, and she survives along with his sons, Ralph (Jewell) Johnson of Westport, William Earl Johnson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Steve (Kelly) Johnson of Panama City, Florida; his sisters, Joan (Ron) Smith of North Vernon and Mary Jo (Robert) Craigmyle of Carmel; his brother, Jerry (Alice) Johnson of Tipton; his grandchildren, Madison Joy, Audrey Gail, Sawyer and Sullivan Johnson, all of Panama City, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wayne E. and Robert Lynn; and a sister, Claire Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. David A. Scaggs officiating. Burial will follow at Westport Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2013, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Westport Baptist Church Building Fund, Westport Volunteer Fire Department or Our Hospice of Decatur County.
