Dorothy Jean Sowder, age 89, of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday morning, December 11, 2013, at McCormack’s Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born October 17, 1924, in Columbus, Indiana, to Gora and Margaret Helen Ritchey Lewis.
Dorothy spent her professional career in accounting with the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as well as Seventh Day Adventist Church locations in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Bloomington. She was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Fort Lauderdale and Bloomington. She also was a volunteer for the Red Cross.
Dorothy leaves behind her sons, Gregory Sowder and his wife Melinda of Ellettsvile, and Steven Sowder and his wife Marilyn of Niles, Michigan; grandchildren, Michelle Eckhardt, Gregory Michael Sowder and his wife Terri, David Sowder and his wife Marlene, Ryan Sowder and his wife Angela, and Amy Geatches and her husband Michael. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley Sowder, in 2008; a brother, Robert Lewis; and a sister, Esther Mae Rucker.
Graveside services for Dorothy will be held Monday morning, December 16, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Stanley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe County Toys for Tots campaign or the donor's favorite charity.
