Richard "Dick" Samuel Carley, Sr., 65, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, FL, as a result of a delayed toxic reaction to his lungs from chemotherapy following a bone marrow transplant this past Spring. Dick was surrounded by his family and friends at his passing.
Dick was born March 14, 1948, in Andover, CT, to the late John Carley and Nell Carley (Port Charlotte, FL). On February 8, 1969, in Andover, CT, he married Lula (Frazier) Carley while a member of the U.S. Army. Dick served on active duty overseas during the Vietnam War.
In 1975 Dick and Lula moved back to Lula’s childhood home area in Brown County, IN, and purchased a two-story log home kit which Dick assembled and built with his own hands. Between 1975 and 1987 Dick was employed by Sears in Columbus, IN, in the Home Improvements area and also as the Manager of the Sears Automotive Center. In 1987 he took a job with Farm Bureau Insurance as an Agent for the Nashville, IN, office. In 1990 Dick and Lula moved to Venice, FL. Over the next 23 years they moved back and forth between Englewood, FL, and Columbus, IN, to spend time with their grandchildren. While in Columbus, IN, during this time, Dick worked at Walmart, Rural King and Cummins Fuel Systems.
Dick was preceded in death by his father, John Carley. He is survived by his wife, Lula; his mother, Nell Carley; a brother, Jack (Kathy Jo) Carley, and a sister, Eileen (Marty) Martinez, all of Port Charlotte, FL; a son, Rich (Jennifer) Carley of Englewood, FL; a daughter, Charlotte (John) Prohaska of Columbus, IN; and grandchildren, Kasi, Madi, AJ and Sami Prohaska of Columbus, IN, and Ryan, Megan, Charlotte and Erin Carley of Englewood, FL.
Dick was cremated per his wishes and a private memorial service will take place at a later date.
